Social Centre and Meals on Wheels

• There has been a very successful Meals on Wheels Service operating out of the Family Resource Centre for three years, which currently delivers over 50 meals each week.

Thanks are due to the group of hard-working, dedicated volunteers who do the cooking and delivery of the meals. They are assisted by Liz, the Meals on Wheels Support and Development Worker.

There is a fully equipped kitchen in the resource Centre where meals are prepared on Mondays and Wednesdays for clients referred through the public Health Nursing Department.

Funding comes from Health Service Executive South and helps to support older people to live at home and in their own communities.

The Meals on Wheels Voluntary Management Committee overseas the project in conjunction with the Family Resource Centre.

• The Meals on Wheels Social Centre offers social and recreational activities once a week for older adults.

The programme each week includes a meal, activities such as arts and crafts, physical activity and exercise and courses.

With this addition to its services for older people, the Family Resource Centre aims to encourage positive and healthy ageing, as well as encouraging and supporting independent living for older people.

• Rural Transport Scheme

As part of their expansion strategy, West Cork Rural Transport have offered their full support to the Meals on Wheels Service and the Social Centre in Dunmanway.

This makes the Social Centre much more accessible to people in outlying areas who can be picked up from their homes. The bus will also do a route around Dunmanway town itself to bring people to the Centre.

The Rural Transport Service is free to Travel Pass Holders, otherwise the cost is €6 return.

Contact Liz at the Family Resource Centre – 023 8856818 - if you would like additional information about the Rural Transport Service or wish to register to use the Service to come in to the Social Centre.
